Schluter-TROBA is a reliable and permanently effective drainage system for use over sloped waterproofing layers. It consists of a pressure-stable polyethylene sheet with perforated studs that form vaultlike cavities between the waterproofing layer and the mortar bed. Any water penetrating the tile covering and the mortar bed passes through the perforations located at the sides of the trapezoid-shaped studs to the sloped waterproofing layer, where it runs off freely through the cavities to the drainage exit.

Schluter-TROBA Over Sloped Waterproof Drainage System - Material:

Schluter-TROBA consists of a pressurestable polyethylene sheet with a structure of trapezoid-shaped, 6 mm high, studs. To allow penetration of seepage water, the corners of the studs are equipped with holes. The contact area of the matting is approximately 50%; free space constitutes the remaining 50%. The material will not rot and is form-stable within a temperature range of -40 F (-40 C) to 176 F (80 C). Schluter-TROBA is used primarily in horizontal applications over sloped waterproofing layers. TROBA provides an effective drainage layer between the waterproofing layer and the covering assembly above. This system is generally used on balconies and terraces, but its applications also include industrial structures, swimming pool decks, washrooms, showers, etc. (all of which have been waterproofed).

The loosely placed Schluter-TROBA is adequately resistant to mechanical stresses incurred during the installation process; i.e., due to foot traffic and wheelbarrows.

The load-distribution layer may consist of a mortar bed with or without a tile covering, or it may be constructed of crushed stone or gravel with a paver or stone covering. It is also possible to apply a covering of soil. Any water that penetrates the covering is collected in the stilted drainage area of Schluter-TROBA where it runs off, under normal gravitational force, toward the designated drainage exit. Thus, permanent saturation of the load-distribution layer, due to seepage water, is eliminated.

Schluter-TROBA - Uncoupling:

Tile has been successfully installed for thousands of years by incorporating an uncoupling layer, or forgiving shear interface, within the tile assembly. Schluter-TROBA provides uncoupling through its open rib structure, which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile, thus eliminating the major cause of cracking and delaminating of the tiled surface

Schluter-TROBA - Waterproofing:

Schluter-TROBA provides reliable waterproofing in interior and exterior applications. Its polyethylene composition protects the substrate from moisture penetration, which is particularly important in today's building environment where most substrates are moisture sensitive.

Schluter-TROBA - Vapor Management:

The distinguishing feature of Schluter-TROBA-RO is the existence of free space created by the configured channels on the underside of the matting. The free space provides a route for excess moisture and vapor to escape from the substrate that could otherwise cause damage to the tile layer above. Thus, TROBA effectively manages moisture beneath the tile covering.

Schluter-TROBA - Support/Load Distribution:

When placed on a solid foundation, columns or pillars can support tremendous loads. The same physical principle applies to Schluter-TROBA installations. Column-like mortar structures are formed in the cutback cavities of the matting. Loads are transferred from the tile covering through these column-like mortar structures to the substrate. Since TROBA is virtually incompressible within the tile assembly, the advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities. The ability of TROBA installations to support and distribute heavy loads while preserving the integrity of the tiled surface has been verified through extensive laboratory and field testing, including applications exposed to vehicular traffic.
