Product Video Disclaimer: "PED is not responsible for any variances from the product in this video and the item you purchase. Please review all product specs prior to purchase."
A.O. Smith continues to lead the way in residential and commercial water heating with close to 70 years of innovative hot water solutions. The HPTU-66N features A.O. Smith's latest high efficiency electric water heating technology. By using an electric heat pump rather than resistive heating elements the HPTU line offers money saving efficiency, with a 3.17 Uniform Energy Factor. A 66 gallon tank and multiple operating modes allow the unit to fit nearly any hot water need. Additional quality of life features such as backup electric elements, and a Coreguard anode rod keep the HPTU-66N running reliably and efficiently even in periods of high demand.
  • High Efficiency Electric Hot Water
  • The A.O. Smith Voltex line heats water with a high efficiency electric heat pump rather than conventional electric methods. This provides efficient hot water while also helping to dehumidify and cool the ambient air around the unit.
  • Multiple Operating Modes
  • The HPTU-66N comes with 3 different operating modes: Efficiency, Hybrid, and Electric, to meet any and all hot water needs. Hybrid mode automatically adjusts between the compressor and heating element. Vacation mode reduces costs for up to 99 days.
  • Coreguard Anode Rod
  • The stainless steel anode rod core helps extend the life of the heater by protecting it from the corrosive effects of hot water. Coreguard technology helps to extend the life more than that of a standard rod.
  • User-Friendly Electronic Interface
  • A built-in easy to read controller on the unit gives you easy access to temperature settings, operating mode, and multiple diagnostics to make sure your unit is running exactly how you want it.

Had Trouble After Original Install.
By Jon H

On original install did not make it more than a few hours. It shut down. There was a loose wire that shorted out. Had a master electrician in to trouble shoot and the wire that I found burnt he said had not been tight from the factory and was what caused the problem. Ecomfort sent a part that arrived 2 days later it was replaced and wiring properly tightened and have had no problem since. Bought the 65 gallon system and so far with 5-7 ion house we have not run out of hot water yet.

here is to hoping the trouble on startup is behind us. It is working well now.

I love this hybrid heater

This water heater was very easy to install. It's been running in the heat pump mode since I installed it. You can hear the fan running, but it's more from the air movement perspective. I do like how it doubles as a dehumidifier. So if you're like I am with an older home that has a damp basement, I no longer need to run my dehumidifier. So I'm not sure if I'm getting free hot water or free dehumidifying, but feels great to not be paying for both of them. I've only had it running for a month, so I'm looking forward to my next electric bill. I marked the value as 5 stars because I did get a $600 rebate from my state efficiency program. If I had to pay full price without the rebate I would have given 4-stars as the return on investment would have been longer.

Good So Far

Everything works well and seems like a quality product. Keeps up with normal demand from our 7 person household. Certainly a lot better than the old one! Looking forward to seeing whether the claims on efficiency are true - too soon to tell because we have only had it for a month. Overall very pleased so far.

Awesome hot water heater with great warranty! This is not only an efficient hot water heater but a dehumidifier as well utilizing the heat in your basement or home to help heat the water while dehumidifying the air!

I highly recommend this heater!

Good Water Heater

When changing from one water heater to another the plumbing doesn't quite fit. Unless you're comfortable working with minor pipe changes you might want to consider having the water heater installed for you. The heater works great - I have it set on economy, at 135 degrees, and it provides plenty of hot water for my wife and I. The real test will come when the heater is around 10 years old. But, right now it works great. I have it installed in an unfinished basement and it works well. I'm sure it would work even better in a warmer climate, I live in Denver.

So Far, It's Working Great
By Richard P.

Review Posted 08/03/2017
It took a little time for the initial power up self test to run but it was flawless and had hot water in minutes after it started up. I don't mind the 120 degree hot water if left in efficiency mode, works just fine for me. Make sure you have a good drain line as there is substantial amount of drainage from the dehumidifying effect in my garage. Nice side effect....it keeps the garage noticeably cooler in the hot weather. So far I love it and am impressed with how well it works and how quiet it is when compressor is running. Looking forward to my lower electric bill.
Oh, and pretty easy to install as well. Will order again for friends, family, and others.

Excellent Service and Product

I am extremely happy the service and the product that I ordered. It actually arrived earlier that expected, and the price could not be beat. Local vendors could not compete with service and price.

I live in Florida, so the Hybrid Water Heater is an excellent choice because of the hot weather. I had it installed in my garage which can get in the 90's in summer. Even in what we call winter, the hybrid mode works just find. So far, it has worked in the hybrid mode only.

As I type this memo, I see the word Durable below. My old water heater was an A.O. Smith and it lasted 28 years and was still working, but did not want to push it. That was one of the reason for going with the A.O. Smith product

It's been in use now for about a week

I like having the temp on the outside. It's easy to adjust. I can't comment on quality. If it lasts for the life of the warranty (10 years) it will be great. The performance is great. When I first filled it, I had hot water in less than 10 minutes and that is only because that is when I was able to check. It may have been a lot less.

I read several reviews and my biggest concern was that it was going to be noisy. It's not as quit as the all electric one that was replaced, but I don't think it's noisy. My wife can't hear it. Bonus. Great value. About half the cost of some of the premium brands and equally or have better efficiency ratings. It has been great so far.

Can't wait to see my first electric bill after installing
By Shaun C.
Ferndale, Michigan
Purchased 12/19/2016 |
Review Posted 01/03/2017
I installed the 50 gal version of this unit last Thursday and have an energy bridge from my electric company that lets me track my real time electric usage. My 13 year old electric water heater was way past its 6 year warranty so I decided to swap it out to this and couldn't be happier.

After 3 back to back showers this unit did not even engage the electric elements to reheat the tank, so I doubt I will ever need to moving forward. I used to use 5.5 kwh to heat water, probably 8kwh/day now I get away with using .5kwh for a total of around 1 kwh/day. I am guessing this will save about $30/month with my homes hot water usage with 2 people. The unit is also very quiet, I have it installed in my basement so I can't hear it, but I would imagine if it was on the main floor in a closet with ventilation it wouldn't be noticeable.

I can't speak to the long term durability of the heat pump parts, or any for that matter but I am hoping it lasts a while. Even if it only lasts 6 years, I'm still going to be almost a grand ahead of the competition after energy savings. I am very happy with my decision to try a new style of water heater, and have been trying to convince my friends with old electrics to make the switch as well.
