- Powerful Protection

- Electrical Equipment with a Disconnect
Barring a major remodeling project, purchasing heating and cooling equipment is the largest investment you will make in your home. While manufacturers offer excellent warranties that cover a wide variety of circumstances, one conspicuous absence is common: power surge coverage. A catastrophic electrical event can leave you scrambling to replace your furnace, boiler, or mini split system out of pocket, even if it's only a few years old. That's where ICM Controls' ICM517 comes in. The ICM517 is a UL1449 3rd Edition-certified HVAC surge protection device. It provides your heating and cooling equipment with both exceptional protection and additional warranty coverage. Don't remain at the mercy of Mother Nature and your electrical company, install an ICM517 HVAC surge protection device on your equipment and enjoy unparalleled peace of mind.

This installed easy. I hope we never need it. No way to know if it works unless we have a power surge. We are expecting it to work as it should.

ICM517 120/240-Volt Surge Protector
By Frederick D

Review Posted 09/10/2020
I have recently installed a Mitsubishi ductless mini-split heat-pump, I generally would not have considered installing a surge protector on the branch circuit. However, it was suggested on the eComfort website. I did purchase and install the ICM517 surge protector on the branch circuit feeding the mini-split. The price paid for the ICM517 Surge protector was very small when compared to the overall cost of the mini-split. Ductless mini-split systems are controlled by microprocessors installed on complex printed wire circuit boards. Additionally the compressor motors have variable speed drives, again a complex electronic device. The electric grid operates in a real world environment with transients, sags and surges which can create high voltage peaks that can destroy electronic circuits. paying less than $60 for some level of surge protection is a very good idea.

This came as part of the installation kit. For most, it is probably a good idea!
However, my house has a whole house surge protection system and this was not required.

impressed with the quality of surge suppressor . I am a licensed electrician so I knew it was quality product when I opened it I figured spending $60.00 to protect a $3200 mini split system seemed like a wise bet. After receiving product I knew it was a good move

I live in the country in a nice subdivision with lots of land. We have underground utilities and they are reasonably reliable.
Over the past few years we have had few storms that temporarily shutdown the electricity from 1 minute to over a day. I had this surge suppressor installed when I had my mini split installed, about a year ago. Through all the storms, my mini split seemed to have very little interruption except when there was a total outage. My TV's might take a hit, but the mini split was protected.

Hook It Up

The installation of my outdoor mini-split unit did not call for a surge protector but it makes HUGE sense to do so and is highly-recommended by eComfort. Install it at the outdoor unit disconnect for the best protection, NOT at the circuit breaker panel. The box easily mounts to the disconnect enclosure, via 1/2" knockout opening. It is rated for outdoor installation of course and has weather seal material already applied to the base of the conduit.
The instructions do not definitively tell you whether to wire it to the LINE side or the LOAD side the disconnect. The best I could derive was to install it on the LOAD side so that by pulling the disconnect, power to the protector is interrupted along with your appliance. It is recommended by ICM to test the protector before installing. This was best done on a workbench and by applying 115 VAC to the various wires per instructions and looking for the appropriate LED indicator responses. Good luck my friend!
