Longevity Of Liberty Pump Mdel 257
By Ed S.
Ohio
Review Posted 02/16/2025
This pump lasted 5 years 10 months in a sump that collects both ground water and laundry water. Typically I get 6-7 years from all brands of pumps used to include Wayne, Liberty, Zoeller and a Home Depot branded pump called Diamond. Most were 1/3 or 0.4HP pumps.

An Experienced Mechanical Engineer's Review
By Richard T, Registered Professional Engineer, Illinois

Unique design features: It has an inverted bell jar design for the body casting. In other words, there is no top motor seal to leak and fail. Compared to competitors, it has one less gasket point of failure. Also, it has a magnetic induction float switch. Typical float switches has mechanical linkage seals which are notorious for gasket fatigue. In other words, this Liberty pump switch design has another feature...one more....less rubber seal to fail. For durability and service life, my current sump pump is now 15 years old in my own personal field testing and is still running strong. And since I have a high local water table, my sump pump runs frequently. Reliability is a key issue for me. Recently, I just pulled the pump for inspection, the epoxy coating laid over the cast iron body still looks great. No significant corrosion despite being submerged all these years. Further, all the stainless steel pump assembly fasteners and trim still appear shiny.

Best Practices. Keep a spare. I keep a spare pump on my shelf inventory at home for back-up plus all the necessary plumbing discharge fittings. My insurance claims experience tells me pumps can often fail late on a Sunday evening after the big box stores have already closed. Second, after big storms, next day, there is a purchasing run on available shelf sump pump inventory at Menards or Home Depot or Lowes. The point being, morning after a big storm, everyone then rushes out for a sump pump replacement and the store shelves get quickly picked clean of inventory. Third, sump pumps are a commodity item wherein one gets exactly what you pay for and the big box retailers only seem to stock the lower quality sump pumps for consumer price point. Fourth, avoid tethered float switches. Tethered float switch often get tangled up in the sump pit causing malfunction. Further, tethered float switches experience cable wire fatigue failure with age and movement cycles at or near the flexible attachment pivot point. Fifth, high water alarm devices in or near the sump pit are a good idea. Mine has saved me a mess a time or two in the past when my primary pump was struggling to keep up with a radical storm inflow which gave me additional time to drop in a temporary second discharge pump for added capacity. Sixth, recently, I added cam lock and groove fitting hardware set-up for rapid sump pump replacement (with all the attached plumbing fittings pre-configured).

Considering making the Liberty model 257 my primary sump pump and then making our existing Zoeller an emergency backup. We have a lot of iron in our water. Would the aluminum model 237 be better or worse for high iron content?
