Liberty Sump Pump

Review Posted 04/07/2023
This pump has been in service for around 2 years. I will note primary check valve failed within a few weeks of use. It is very cheap. Secondary pump check valve failed within months of the primary. The pumps themselves are good quality and reliable. I ended up pulling the pump and redesigning with the use of Zoeller Quiet Check Valves and have had quiet trouble free operation ever since.

Check Valves Both Failed Within A Month

This unit came recommended by Sump Pumps Direct (SPD).
It was simple and quick to install and initially ran perfectly. My sump only fills during heavy rains, so the unit was not operating under undue stress
Within a month both check valves failed and the only recourse from SPD was receiving two replacement check valves. The unit was allowing water to discharge back into the sump almost as fast as it was pumping water outside.
The entire idea was to purchase a "plug & play" unit. Now I will have to spend more time than the initial install to figure out how to break apart the unit, replace the check valves and put it all back together.
Not a fan. Disappointed.

Expert Response
Very sorry to hear you've experienced check valve failure on this system. We rarely see any issues with these systems, but as with anything mechanical, issues can happen. Since these are the slip-on type check valves, removal/replacement is extremely easy and only requires a screwdriver.

I purchased this pump as I have a small sump pump pit that measures 15" in diameter (a true 15" diameter cylinder, no tapering) and 20" deep and the Zoeller pumps with a backup pump require a bigger pit.
Strike #1 - My frustration started with the fact that after I installed the pump and tested it, I noticed water spewing out the backup pump. I pulled the pump and the flapper piece was never installed in the check valve. I was able to pick up the flapper piece from Sump pumps direct for free, but I'm not impressed by the lack of quality control from Liberty.
Strike #2 - This pump explicitly states that it is for small pits, size 14" or more. Unfortunately, this pump goes off constantly and runs for only 3 seconds at a time. I have pulled the pump several times and added patio blocks under it, but the pump kicks out the water too quickly and there is no way to adjust the vertical float. The float has a very small range. My old pump had a pressure switch and would kick on when the connected drain tiles were approximately half full. Even with 5" of patio blocks beneath it, this Liberty pump kicks on with even a little bit of rain. I now have to send another $85 on a hydro check switch.
After buying this Liberty pump kit, a $300 battery, and now a new switch, I'm out $1,100 and not sure this was a good purchase.

Needs Some Fine Tuning

Looks like a good solid pump combination but has a couple of flaws in assembly. In the instruction it stresses not to put the battery below the control board but only gives you about 16 inches of wire to run between them. A little more wire would be good. Also the plug on the main pump and the plug on the charger both have the plus at a right angle to the wire which makes it very difficult to use the same power outlet box without an aadapter of sorts. It is a very quiet solid pump.

This is a great combo sump pump! Very high quality parts at a good price. If you want the extra bells of phone connectivity get the upgraded charging system but I didn't find that necessary. Very easy to install with basic skills. Works great and emptied my pit quickly.

I bought this unit in September 2016 and installed it myself. All of the components are very high quality. It has been in place for about 15 months. The unit is very quiet and it is more than adequate for pumping up and out of my basement. I have given it an excellent rating because of its overall quality and value for the price.. I do have two comments and suggestions for the company.
First, the battery charger for the backup battery has its circuitry built into the plug head that plugs into the outlet. That plug is very large and heavy and could fall out of the outlet. I would like to see the battery charger have a 2 or 3 foot cord that plugs into the outlet. Second, the connector block that provides the switching between between AC and the battery could be larger and have better connectors with longer wires. It must be mounted very close to the battery and that limits flexibility in the installation.

Does this back up pump have similar specs to the Main 257 pump?

I'm confused about battery specification for this. Your site says not to use AGM battery, but Liberty's site says you can. Why the difference in advice? Thank you.

If the 120 v pump can't keep up it sounds as if the battery backup pump will kick in---but the units share a common pipe so how can you add water /flow to an already maxed out pipe?? Would this not just increase head pressure on the battery pump causing it to work even harder????
