For years a garage heater had been on my wish list, and I finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. My HVAC contractor last year recommended a Modine HotDawg natural gas heater, which he would install for $3500 (parts & labor) and would entail drilling a hole through the roof to vent. Given the high cost and the fact, I wish not to drill through the roof, I decided not to proceed. In December 2024, I heard that Modine had introduced the electric version of the HotDawg heater called the AmpDawg and it received rave reviews. What sold me on it is that its output was much like that of the HotDawg and it required no venting. I purchased the AmpDawg and after it being delivered and unpacked, it certainly appeared to be worth its $1600 price tag. It's a very high-quality unit with nothing appearing cheaply made. It took 2 individuals to lift and install onto what appeared to be a very heavy-duty, but simple ceiling mounting bracket and a new 220 50 AMP circuit via 6/3 wire had to be run from the breaker box to the heater along with a new thermostat. The thermostat I chose was the plain round dial Honeywell heat-only CT87K1004. I love this heater, as it has no problem heating my 24' x 24' 2-car garage with a 10' ceiling. I do plan on adding R-38 insulation in the attic area above the garage, as to retain the heat within. What I also like about the heater is when it first turns on, it's at low heat/low fan speed and if it can't reach the temperature set on the thermostat within 10 minutes, it then switches to high heat/high fan speed. It's a nice feature Modine built into the unit. And it's also very quiet. After 3 weeks of use, I have no complaints, just praise for the unit. As a side note. After the heater was all hooked up and power to it turned on, there was a blinking green LED "SYS" light on the control board. Modine had to be contacted directly, as no information was readily available for it. They said it's normal for it to blink, as it's a control board system communication confirmation.
