This tankless water heater kit allows you to use the power and efficiency of select Weil-McLain steam boilers for domestic hot water production. Tankless water heaters lack the recovery period of traditional tank-type water heaters, providing you with on demand hot water twenty-four hours a day. Another advantage of installing a tankless water heating coil in your boiler is the space savings. A tankless coil increases the space necessary to install your boiler only slightly, as a result of the additional piping. However, direct and indirect fired water heaters are frequently larger than boilers themselves. If you value economy of space and energy, consider adding this tankless water heating kit to a Weil-McLain steam boiler.

The Weil McLain 386-700-350 hot water boiler insert was easy to install and came with everything needed to use the boiler as domestic hot water production. The kit came with a new tankless coil insert, wire harness mounts for the wire temperature wire, screws, gasket, stud bolts with brass nuts to hold the insert in, as well as a wire protector for the thermostat housing and a thermostat and well. The kit did not come with Thermostat wire or fittings for the plumbing. The kit also did not have instructions. These can be found in the boiler manual (although this section in the boiler manual was not detailed). Albeit Instructions aren’t really needed for this install. The boiler was new as well. The boiler came with a block off plate and knock out panel in the boiler jacket. I knocked out the knock out. Removed the block off plate. Removed the gasket. I installed the new gasket. Did not replace the studs and nuts. Reused the studs and nuts that came with the boiler for the block off plate. I then pushed the coil inside. I had to tweak the coil slightly to fit into the boiler. I then tightened the studs into the boiler and then evenly tighten the brass nuts securing the tankless coil into the boiler. I then used 3/4 male copper threaded fittings to 3/4 copper sweat fittings for the water connection. I also reused the existing thermostat as this was a customer adjustable Thermostat. I used the new thermostat well with the old Thermostat. The new Thermostat was an L4080 by Honeywell. The existing was an L4006. The thermostat well was also a 3/4 male threaded fitting.
The kit could be cheaper if the Thermostat was sold separately but it is nice that the kit comes with what is needed to install a new system for DHW or replace a failed coil in an existing system.
This system supplies a 40 gal tank so the hot water is practically endless even with two showers, a dishwasher and a washing machine. The tankless coil can work to heat the tank while the tank acts as a 40 gallon buffer. Depending on the boiler size and temperature the amount of hot water produced by the coil in GPM is listed in the boiler manual.

I was convinced that I’d spend a day but with the items provided in the kit, it became a simple job taking less that two hours to accomplish. Great product providing everything except the plumbing.
