Forget The Box Stores

Usually I buy a pump from a box store because of the immediacy of replacing a failed pump/flooding. After going through three pumps with the automatic float i got the feeling that the automatic float pumps have a short cycle and puts a lot of wear on the switch. This time I opted for the tethered float type to get more of a level differential on the cycle and the control of selecting on and off heights. I tethered out the minimum of 5” of cord and am happy with the results. Dramatically fewer cycles as it takes a long time for the water to rise enough to turn it on.
The automatic pumps keep the level too low and short cycle. I’m also hoping that the tethered switch is more resilient than the mechanical switch on automatic pumps. This pump is also an oil filled motor with bearings, cast iron body and a engineered plastic impeller that can move up to 1/2” solids. Better than what is available at box stores. You do need a sump deep enough and wide enough to accommodate this type of float switch. Mine is maybe 30” deep and 18”-20” wide.
I’m keeping the lesser quality pump I bought at a box store as a backup if this ever fails in an emergency. I also bought an alarm to warn me of a failure because flooding basement is no fun.

Great pump...I got this pump two weeks before we had a really bad 8 inch rain storm. Worked really well and was able to keep up with the amount of water coming in the pit. My pit is large enough to use the tether piggy back float switch. It is able to pump longer cycles and more water than the standard vertical float. This eases my mind. The old Wane pump
served me well for 14 years but it was time to put it in the bone yard.

Seems well built and stocky. Reasonable price. My sump pump system worked with no weep hole. Pumped water like mad and is almost silent. Talk to me in 10 years to see how it holds up.

During a heavy rain and melting snow last February in north In. This pump ran 24/7 for two weeks with no problems period, water came in so fast the pump would cycle on then off I thought it would be better to disconnect the switch and run the pump full time and worked out well. I wouldn't recommend for the novice if you're new to this type of problem.
The pump is built strong and made to last a long time, I will buy another one if this one ever fails. Another good point to end this with is, the web site for Zoeller has a contact for them and you can talk to an English speaking person that has a wealth of knowledge about water problems and solutions and that's a great reason to buy American made.
